BUPA Ashbury put on a Christmas lunch today complete with ham, turkey, Christmas pudding and crackers. One of the nurses had made some adorable cupcakes too.
Two nephews (12 and 14 years old) of one of the residents entertained us playing duelling banjos - they are obviously very talented boys! After that a professional entertainer arrived and there was much singing along to old favourite Christmas songs. I even managed to get Nelson up on the dance floor which made him really giggle.
It was very touching to see a very frail old man making a huge effort to get out of his chair to briefly dance with his daughter. It was obvious that he'd been a very good dancer in his younger days and he really enjoyed doing it again, showing he still "had it".
Nelson really got into the spirit of the day, making sure other guests had enough to eat and drink, and generally joking around.
I must say that over the past few weeks I've noticed that Nelson's general mood seems very happy these days, in contrast to how negative and depressed he was only 2 or 3 months ago.
This is Nelson's new(ish) room mate. He is physically fit and healthy and can carry on a conversation which suits Nelson much more than the previous people he's shared with. Glennen is not usually in his room much during the day, so Nelson can have a bit of privacy and sleep undisturbed when he likes throughout the day.
